This is book one in a series that has a strong fan base, for obvious reasons.  Flinx is an orphan bought and market and raised by a Mother Mastiff. When multiple forces converge, trying to both use and analyze him for what he was made to be, his life gets turns on its head as he tries to rescue the only mother he’s ever had.

I remember reading this so long ago, and honestly it is still just as good.  It could easily be a YA novel as the character is only 16 and is being hounded for abilities he has no control over and doesn’t understand why anyone cares.

What fascinates me is the world building Foster can do, so fast and simple. He’s and expert at people having multiple motivations, creating worlds that you want to explore, and characters that you care about in pages.

If you’ve never read it, pick it up. There are more books about the adventures of Pip and Flinx. Ah, Pip. Look you get an Alaspinian Minidragon I want to know, just saying, it might be cooler than a talking cat as a pet.
